About the Institute

D.I. Ivanovsky Institute of Virology Division of N.F. Gamaleya National Research Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation

D.I. Ivanovsky Institute of Virology is one of the world largest scientific and research centers specializing in ecology, epidemiology, and molecular biology of human and animal viruses. The Institute includes the State Viruses Collection of the Russian Federation, Russian National Collection of Cell Cultures, and several Russian national research centers. The Institute supports and develops broad scientific contacts with the World Health Organization; the leading scientists of the Institute are WHO experts.

Along with studying fundamental aspects of virology, the Institute develops and improves advanced methods of diagnostics, tests new preventive and therapeutic medications against highly dangerous and socially significant viral infections. The Institute is engaged in pilot production of test systems and regular large-scale monitoring of viral infections in the Russian Federation.

The Institute focuses on studying viruses with a highly variable genome, that are able to induce epidemic emergencies, including, primarily, the influenza viruses, arboviruses, HIV, transfusion hepatitis viruses. To forecast and analyze epidemics, the Institute studies the ecology of causative agents, using a wide range of interdisciplinary approaches to assessment of population interactions in the host-virus system.
